A very interesting iron die
Lot 2452
Anonymous. Die (Iron, 22x34 mm, 98.08 g), circa 10th century. Facing imperial bust, wearing loros and set on pedestal. A highly interesting and unusual item. Somewhat corroded, otherwise, very fine.

Unfortunately, the incuse image on this die is too poorly preserved to make out its full details. It is somewhat reminiscent of John I Zimisces's miliaresia (SB 1792) showing his bust in a central medallion attached to a cross crosslet, but our die lacks the medallion, crosslets and legends. Perhaps it is an unaccomplished forger's die, or it was used to produce jewelry rather than coins
